In 2011, the LMDA conference took the theme “The Dramaturg as Public Artist,” challenging dramaturgs to use their skills in institutional and audience outreach to imagine a truly "public" role for themselves. The 2012 conference expanded upon this conversation by using the city of Atlanta as a case study for how dramaturgs and other artists can serve the community in truly public and innovative ways. Attendees immersed themselves in the local ecology of Atlanta, traveling to sites around the city to speak to the community’s artist-leaders. Dramaturgs were then be challenged to ask: How do we see our own communities reflected in Atlanta, and how can we adapt the local lessons we learn here back to our own communities?
