LMDA sponsors projects designed to assist the growth of the dramaturgical profession. Current programs and services for LMDA members include:

DRAMATURG-DRIVEN PROJECTS

LMDA offers seed money to support projects conceived, spearheaded, and/or orchestrated by LMDA member dramaturgs. This $500 grant is designed to support unique and innovative projects that are 'driven' by dramaturgs. Past projects have come from across the theatrical spectrum but are united by the driving force of a dramaturg to make the project happen. Submission requirements and deadlines are announced on the list serv. Deadlines are April 1 and October 1 each year.

RESIDENCY PROGRAM

The LMDA Residency Grant was established to connect theaters with dramaturgs for projects and/or seasons in which a dramaturg in residence can be strongly supported and employed. The deadline is December 15 each year.

ELLIOTT HAYES AWARD

The LMDA Prize in Dramaturgy is awarded in recognition of contributions by dramaturgs to the conception, development and production of theatre or to educational projects in dramaturgy.  Named in honor of Elliott Hayes, the former dramaturg and literary manager at The Stratford Festival, this award recognizes excellence in dramaturgical work on a specific project. The deadline is February 15 each year.

LMDA Project Submission and Deadline Information

Residency Grant: Membership in LMDA is required for a residency grant.

The grant supports a residency for a dramaturg within a theater community that requires his or her artistry and skills. Dramaturgs can approach theaters or theaters can approach dramaturgs for a show, a special project, literary management support, play development workshops, etc. /or with additional support for a dramaturgical residence for a spring or winter season.

Grant Application Deadline: December 15, 2007. (December 15 every year.)

Grant Mission: To foster a partnership between a dramaturg and a theater that would like to employ a dramaturg, but has been unable to secure funds for an upcoming project.

Application Format:

 1) Identification of the theater.  Include their website if possible.

 2) Identification of the dramaturg. Please attach a current bio or resume.

 3) A short and concise description of the project, playwright, amount sought ($1500 is our budgeted limit), dates of performance, reading or workshop.

 4) A simple statement about the theater's goals for  dramaturgical imput into the project. Include the theater's expectations for dramaturgical functions and the relationships that the theater hopes to foster with a dramaturg on board.

Procedure: While the process can begin with either the dramaturg or the theater, the application is to be submitted by the theater.  The work should occur during the 2005 theater season.  The applications will be reviewed by the LMDA Executive Committee and the criteria will be based upon perceived benefits to the project, the needs of the theater and the advocacy of dramaturgy as a vital part of the theatermaking process

A simple letter/report from the theater and the dramaturg will be required at the end of the residency telling us how it went.

LMDA's assistance in each residency must be acknowledged in programs or other project literature.
