Biography
Deanie Vallone is the Literary and New Play Consultant at Milwaukee Rep and a freelance dramaturg. She was most recently the Literary Director at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, overseeing the theater's New Play Development program. Mainstage dramaturgical credits with Milwaukee Rep include Much Ado About Nothing, Songs for Nobodies, and Steel Magnolias (dir. Laura Braza); Eclipsed and The Chinese Lady (dir. May Adrales); Titanic, West Side Story, Junk, and Run Bambi Run (dir. Mark Clements); as well as the world premieres of Wife of a Salesman (by Eleanor Burgess, dir. Marti Lyons), Lost Girl (by Kimberly Belflower, dir. Ryan Quinn), and Parental Advisory (by Idris Goodwin, dir. Kyle Haden). Over her career, she has developed new work with Lloyd Suh, Jon Rua, Dael Orlandersmith, Eric Simonson and Gordon Gano, Lauren Gunderson, Quan Barry, Kira Rockwell, and Ayad Akhtar, among others. Alongside playwright Marisa Carr, she wrote the audio tour walking play Soundstage MKE.
She's provided dramaturg on projects with the NNPN/Kennedy Center, Forward Theater, and other theaters around Wisconsin. Previously she worked as Dramaturgy Fellow at Baltimore Center Stage, Dramaturgy and Casting Apprentice at Asolo Rep, and Education Resident at Milwaukee Rep.
She has been a reader for the Yale Drama Prize, Playwrights Center, O'Neill National Playwrights Conference, Great Plains Theatre Conference, and others. She is a lecturer with Osher through UW-Milwaukee. Her prose, poetry, and nonfiction have been published in a number of national and international journals and magazines, including The Wisconsin Review, The Independent (UK), Jumeirah Magazine (UAE), HowlRound, and American Theatre Magazine. For over the past decade she has worked as a volunteer raptor trainer and environmental educator in her hometown (so if anyone is planning to produce a show with live birds, please reach out!!).
