A Greeting from LMDA President Vicki Stroich

It is an honour to accept the role of President of LMDA at this time.  I love my job.  I am proud to share something with the over 600 members of LMDA – we have all decided to embrace a position that witnesses, that searches, that questions and that champions.  We have chosen to be stewards of our theatres, of our culture.

I refer to stewardship with great purpose, because I believe that dramaturgs indeed are responsible, with our peers, to ensure the future of our theatres and our cultures.  As dramaturgs we are uniquely positioned as observers, as synthesizers and champions of ideas, as idea generators ourselves, as facilitators of discussion and as passionate inquirers to contribute to the future of the art forms we love.  Especially when that future appears to be unclear and unstable.

I believe that LMDA’s next step as an organization is to embrace this leadership position in the conversations that are shaping the future of our theatres, our cultures and our communities. We need to reach out, we need to catalyze conversation and ask difficult questions.  We need to use the big, bold and beautiful minds in this organization to help create and articulate a vision for the future.  What we do is no less vital and important than that.

The future of LMDA will be directed towards galvanizing and empowering our membership and the organization, to celebrating the work we do as dramaturgs and what we contribute to the stewardship, the sustainability of the art.  Together we will engage in a conversation within the organization, with our peers and with our communities about what we do, how we do it and, most importantly, why we do it.

Thanks for visiting LMDA's website, a great source of information about dramaturgy and the work of dramaturgs in North America and beyond.  We hope you'll visit often.
