Jan 23-Jan 30: Danielle Mages Amato
Bio: Danielle Mages Amato is the current President of LMDA. In May 2011 she became Literary Manager/Dramaturg at The Old Globe in San Diego. She holds a PhD in Drama and Theatre from the University of California, San Diego, where she also earned an MFA in Dramaturgy. She previously served as the Literary Manager/Dramaturg of The Studio Theatre in Washington, DC, and she has worked freelance as a dramaturg, theatre critic, and university instructor.
Focus: This week I'll be tweeting about two world premieres at The Old Globe. Jonathan Caren's The Recommendation opens this week, and we've got an audience event on Monday with the playwright and associate producer Eric Louie. We also go into rehearsal this week for Marc Acito and Jeffrey Stock's new musical, A Room With A View.
Questions from LMDA
What is your definition of dramaturgy?
Bridging, advocating, articulating, needling, nurturing, challenging, welcoming. And forever defining and redefining.
What is your favorite project?
These two projects represent some of my favorite things about dramaturgical work. The Recommendation is the kind of piece that creates a community in the theatre, where as an audience member, you're laughing but also challenged and very attuned to what everyone else in the room is seeing and thinking. A Room With A View is about immersing yourself in a different time and place, in this case Edwardian England and Italy. It's always a pleasure to sink into the research that way.
