Grants and Awards

Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas offers seed money to support projects conceived, spearheaded, and/or orchestrated by LMDA member dramaturgs. This $500 grant is designed to support unique and innovative projects that are 'driven' by dramaturgs. Past projects have come from across the theatrical and academic spectrum but are united by the driving force of a dramaturg to make the project happen.

Announcing the Spring 2012 Dramaturg Driven Grants

The Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas (LMDA) is pleased to announce the recipients of the Spring 2012 round of Dramaturg Driven Grants: Tiffany Antone  and Shawn Rene GrahamThis round of grants saw seven applications, and the selection process was overseen by LMDA’s Vice-President of Programs, Stephen Colella, along with committee members Kristin Leahey and Rachel Ditor

LMDA offers a stipend for a dramaturgical residency within a theater project, program and/or community that seeks an on-site dramaturgical presence but is unable to fund a dramaturg at this time. LMDA member dramaturgs are encouraged to approach theaters and introduce a dramaturgical role and relationship that would become part of an event within the upcoming season. The dramaturg and the theater together would then determine the role and extent of dramaturgical activity for a show, a special project, literary management support, play development workshops, or other carefully defined events. Stipends may be requested in the amounts of $1000, $1500 and $2000, though a lower amount may be awarded.  Two awards will be presented in each round

Grant Application Deadline: December 15th, every year

AWARD GUIDELINES

The Elliott Hayes Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dramaturgy, presented by the Literary Managers and Dramaturgs of the Americas, awards $500 in recognition of exemplary contributions by dramaturgs to the conception, development and production of theatre or to educational projects in dramaturgy in the Americas over the past two years.

Named in honor of Elliott Hayes, the former dramaturg and literary manager at The Stratford Festival and a dual citizen of Canada and the USA, this award recognizes excellence in dramaturgical work on a specific project; and projects may include, but are not limited to:  productions, publications, season planning and implementation, educational programs or advocacy for the profession.  (See eligibility rules for further details.)

The philosophical foundation of this award – like that of dramaturgy itself – rests in the belief that art benefits from examination on the parts of both artist and audience, and that creative inspiration accompanied by analysis and reflection is most likely to lead to productions and projects that fulfill the spiritual, social and personal potential of the theatrical event.

LMDA‘s Gotthold Ephraim Lessing Award is our most prestigious tribute, given for a lifetime of achievement in the field of dramaturgy.

The Award has been conferred upon:

DD Kugler, 2011

Mark Bly, 2010

Michael Lupu, 2006

Arthur Ballet, 2002

Anne Cattaneo, 1998
