Ilana M. Brownstein is a dramaturg and director specializing in new plays and public arts advocacy. In addition to her role as the Director of New Work at Company One Theatre, she is the Founding Dramaturg at Playwrights' Commons, and on faculty at the BU School of Theatre, where she runs the dramatic literature core curriculum and theatre minor program. Previously, she created the Playwriting Fellows program and Breaking Ground Festival at The Huntington, programs celebrated as part of a 2013 regional Tony Award.

Ilana is the senior dramaturg for the C1 PlayLab program, which has provided script and professional development to 40+ playwrights over 6 seasons. She has participated in new play projects with the Eugene O’Neill National Playwrights Conference, and the Baltic American Playwrights’ Conference; Boston University’s New Play Initiative, and the Professional Theatre Initiative; Boston Playwrights’ Theatre; the Denver Center New Play Summit; the Kennedy Center; Chicago Directors Lab; Yale Rep; Yale Cabaret; Ensemble Studio Theatre; The New Harmony Project; Actors Theatre of Louisville; and on Broadway. In her public-facing work, she is a frequent moderator/facilitator, panelist, and invited delegate at conferences and convenings, and has adjudicated numerous dramaturgy and playwriting residencies and awards.

She holds an MFA in Dramaturgy (Yale), and a Directing BA (College of Wooster). Ilana is a Kilroys nominator for The List, served on the National Advisory Board for HowlRound/A Center for The Theatre Commons, and is a two-time winner of the LMDA Elliott Hayes Award for excellence in dramaturgy (2008, 2014).
